Week of October 29 - November 4: #1

During this past weekend, Bath and Body Works had a promotion where customers could receive a free mini candle if they knew about the offer. This was a great marketing strategy to attract people that may not be interested in their products, or people that have never bothered to shop at the store / online. They also included a survey at the end of the receipt, stating that you can get a "$10 off a $30 purchase" after completing the survey. This is a type of marketing research, specifically survey research, used to "collected information and opinions about a product." The company uses it to improve their products and meet customers' needs. They also add the coupon at the end to get customers back in their store. It is hard to say which marketing strategy is least effective because they all work in different ways. In my opinion, I believe that an ineffective marketing strategy is if an advertisement is not targeted towards a certain group (for example: adults, females, etc).

  1. Those deals always get to me whilst I’m shopping. A lot of stores like Macy’s and Bath and Body Works (as you mentioned) have free gifts with purchases that just makes people think they are getting a really great deal. I mean, they could be, but it also makes us buy products when we do not need to. I think for me, people’s testimonies in commercials are the least effective. They may think that just because these people claim to love the company or the product that others will too. But we do not really get to know for sure if they really used the product. I also agree with you in that when a company is too narrow in their targeted customer, their ads may not be effective.

  2. I noticed that marketing technique by bath and body works too! I thought it was very effective and smart of them to offer something that is free in order to get people to the store. This makes customers want to buy products that they wouldn't have seen unless they walked into the store. I thought it was brilliant to offer the "$10 off of a $30 purchase" on top of the other promotion in order to let the customers feel as though they were getting a good deal on the products. I ended up spending $50 at bath and body works just because of the deals when the only reason I went in there was to buy hand sanitizer for my purse. They are geniuses in their marketing techniques... I got played.

  3. A lot of retail stores use and promote their new deals in order to gain new customers as well as keep past customers. I work in retail at Old Navy, and being behind the register and behind the scenes is very interesting. This weekend we had a sale of buy one get one free for all fleece. This was a very successful sale and drew many people to constantly go in and buy things, especially now that it is fall/ and winter is coming up. Not only with the planning of when to sell things, it is also interesting to see how signing up for an store credit cards work. By signing up for a credit card, we get a discount and rewards, but at the same time it does cause the customer to shop more frequently in order to get those rewards.

    I agree with you about offers. Offers get me all the time. When I see a good deal, I feel it is always worth trying it out when companies are lowering costs to get people to buy products. Victoria secret gets buyers by the mailed coupons. Like the free pair of undies or the $10 off a bra. Free items lets companies get positive and negative reviews on products without the factor of price. Bath and Body always gets me into buying things when I only want the tiny hand sanitizers because as I walk to or from the front, I see lotions with titles that I want to smell.
    I especially like offers when I shop online, like free shipping.

  5. I see that type of advertisement a lot walking through retail stores. It seems like a good deal, but in the end it is a way to make you come back and spend more money on their products. Spending a certain amount in order to receive a free gift is quite convincing to the costumers I encounter at work. So I do think that is a good way to help the company gain more costumers and purchases. And who doesn't like coupons? I think the survey at the end is a great way to get costumers to come back and spend more to use that coupon.
